拜伦的这首《雅典的少女》写于诗人第一次旅居雅典期间，也是拜伦的名篇《恰尔德·哈罗德游记》中的一个篇章。当时拜伦住在英国副领事遗孀色欧杜拉·马珂里的家里,并与她的大女儿特瑞莎坠入爱河,在惜别前他写下了这篇爱情诗。
诗歌的译文是根据翻译家查良铮原译文修正而来的，一直对原译文不太满意，于是就自己试着重新改编了一下，个别地方也没有完全按照拜伦的原文来翻译，但整体诗意仍尽力去吻合拜伦的真情实感。

如要领略拜伦这首诗歌的美妙旋律，还是请读原英文吧，诗歌再怎么翻译，都会损失掉原文的魅力，这是不可避免的损耗。原诗歌的每一个单词每一个段落都饱含着诗人深切的情感传递，这就如一幅名画，你再怎么临摹，也无法复原到一摸一样，更何况翻译诗歌还是用另外一种完全不同的语言。

拜伦历经生活的波折，他在追寻一个更加完美的世界，诗歌是他最重要的途径，爱情其次，当他生命的随着一次次爱情之花的凋谢也随之耗尽之后，他仍然在找寻出路，最终他选择了一条革命的道路，甚至还被推举为希腊革命军的总司令，这大概是他最愚蠢的决策吧，因为他毫无军事才能，这也让他走上自毁的征程，他渴望能战死沙场，走向那荣耀的光环，最终却倒在了行军途中的一场风寒，结束了年仅38岁的生命。
