加拿大学者Nation、Laufer等人曾经发表过一篇题为“How Large a Vocabulary is Needed for

如此!仔细研究英文单词的学习规律，实际上存在一个重要的词汇量“分水岭”，即4000词汇量。为什么是4000?因为这个词汇量恰好决定了你能否比较顺
利地进行一般的英文阅读。
2.简写版读物以4000为词汇量天花板
我经常推荐英语刚入门的学生读《书虫》等简写版读物，实际上，市面上可以看到的简写版读物都有一个共同的特点，那就是词汇量以4000为上限。它的设计依据就是，在这个量以下是基本没有严肃的原版读物可以阅读的。
3.词汇量分水岭的科学依据
美国学者Francis和Kucera曾在1982年做过一次统计，他们发现，英语中一定数量的单词出现的频率相当高，如果一个英语学习者掌握了这些单词，他就可以比较顺利地阅读大部分文本和进行口头交流。表1.中，4000词汇量对应86.8%的文本词汇覆盖。

4.原版青少年读物的词汇量在4000左右
从另一个角度也可以说明为什么4,000是一个重要的分水岭。有西方学者曾做过专门针对阅读青少年读物的词汇量研究，表2.为该项研究的一些数据。

该项研究有力地证实了：虽然英语中一共有54,000的基本单词(不含衍生词)，虽然一个接受过良好教育的英语母语国家的成年人所掌握的词汇量在20,000左右，但只要有4,000左右的词汇量，就可以保证一般阅读理解的正常进行。
5.母语为英语国家人们日常交流的词汇量需求也是4000
还有人做过统计，在母语为英语的国家，人们完成日常交流的词汇量也在4,000上下。所以，从幼儿园开始就读国际学校，或生活在双语环境中的孩子，虽然没有经过专门的阅读训练，但是在小学物五六年级的时候一般都可以比较流畅地阅读英文原版的儿童或青少年读物。
这个现象也跟4000单词分水岭的原理密切相关。因为这个词汇量也是英语可以达到比较流畅的日常交流所需要的词汇量。国际学校或双语氛围能够提供的基本保证就是这个水平的词汇量，因此，阅读普通的青少年读物无需孩子付出太多额外的努力。
6.拥有4000词汇量，英文驶入快车道
